What it means

The category, explained

Some of the largest ships ever built carry no cargo at all. This category holds the working giants, crane vessels, pipelayers, installation ships, whose size serves force rather than freight.

Its resident record-holder is Pioneering Spirit: the largest ship in history by gross tonnage, the widest ever built, and the holder of the heaviest marine lift ever performed, an entire 24,200-tonne North Sea platform removed in a single motion.
