What it means

The category, explained

Some of the largest ships ever built carry no cargo at all. This category holds the working giants — crane vessels, pipelayers, installation ships — whose size serves force rather than freight.

Its resident record-holder is Pioneering Spirit: the largest ship in history by gross tonnage, the widest ever built, and the holder of the heaviest marine lift ever performed — an entire 24,200-tonne North Sea platform removed in a single motion.
