What makes it different
AIDAcosma is the sister to the most historically important cruise ship of the last decade. AIDAnova was the first cruise ship in the world able to run entirely on liquefied natural gas; AIDAcosma was the second, and the class stopped there — a planned third ship was cancelled.
The platform went on to become the most reproduced large-ship design in the industry, appearing across four Carnival Corporation brands. Confusingly it carries two names: Meyer Werft calls it Excellence or Helios, Carnival calls it Excel. Same steel either way.
AIDA's product is unusual for a ship this size. The line runs a German-market club-ship concept — informal, buffet-led, no fixed dining times and no formal nights — which is a very different proposition from the Cunard or Holland America ships built on comparable hulls.
