The story

What makes it different

Celebrity Xcel is what a cruise line builds when it decides the arms race is optional. At roughly 141,000 gross tons and 3,260 passengers she is nowhere near the giants' table — and that is precisely her pitch: Royal Caribbean Group's premium brand deliberately holds its flagship at two-thirds the tonnage of an Icon, trading waterparks for design.

The Edge-class party trick carries over: the Magic Carpet, a tangerine cantilevered platform the size of a tennis court that rides up and down thirteen decks of her starboard side — restaurant at one height, bar at another, tender lobby at the waterline. New for Xcel is The Bazaar, a venue that reprograms itself around every port on the itinerary.

Beneath the styling sits the genuinely historic part: Wärtsilä converted two of her engines to accept methanol alongside conventional fuels, making Xcel the first methanol-capable ship in the fleet and one of the first cruise ships anywhere built ready for the fuel — a quiet bet on what the next thirty years of her life will burn.
