The story

What makes it different

AIDAsol is the fifth Sphinx-series ship and one of the more quietly significant ones. She was among the first cruise ships anywhere fitted to take shore power — shutting her diesel generators down entirely while alongside and drawing electricity from the grid instead.

That matters more than it sounds. A large cruise ship at berth burns fuel continuously to run hotel services, and in city-centre ports like Hamburg that is the single biggest local air-quality complaint against the industry. Shore power removes it.

Her order in December 2007 also prompted a change to a ship already on the slipway: AIDAblu was enlarged mid-build to the 71,000-ton specification, which is why the last four Sphinx ships are bigger than the first three.
