What makes it different
HMM Algeciras was delivered into the strangest month imaginable — April 2020, with world trade in pandemic freefall — as the largest container ship ever built, and promptly departed on a maiden voyage loaded with a then-record 19,621 full containers as locked-down demand for goods exploded.
She was also a national project. HMM is the rebuilt successor to Hyundai Merchant Marine, salvaged by the Korean state after the 2016 Hanjin collapse left the country without a major carrier; ordering twelve of the largest ships on Earth from Korean yards was industrial policy as much as fleet planning.
Her class held the record until Ever Ace slipped 28 TEU past in 2021 — by which time the dozen Algeciras sisters, all named for European ports, had become the backbone of HMM's Asia–Europe network.
