The story

What makes it different

Volendam is the oldest ship Holland America runs and the smallest, at around 60,900 gross tons — roughly a quarter the size of the largest cruise ship in service today.

That is not a weakness in this fleet. The line's identity is built on long voyages to remote places rather than short Caribbean loops, and a 237-metre hull carrying 1,432 passengers can enter harbours where a 360-metre ship must anchor offshore or skip the call entirely.

She is the third Volendam, following ships of 1922 and 1958 — the line has been recycling its names for over a century, and every one of them has ended in -dam since Rotterdam sailed in 1872. It is the most consistently applied naming convention in passenger shipping.
