What makes it different
Celebrity Ascent is the fourth Edge-class ship and the second built on the lengthened hull — twenty metres longer than Edge and Apex, and about 10,000 gross tons larger, with the extra volume going into suites and dining rather than a proportional rise in passenger numbers.
The class feature is the Magic Carpet: a cantilevered platform roughly the size of a tennis court mounted on the starboard side, which moves vertically between decks and changes function as it goes — a tender platform at the waterline, a bar amidships, a restaurant at the top. It is the most genuinely unusual piece of engineering on any modern cruise ship.
Ascent refined rather than reinvented. The Edge design had already dispensed with the traditional wraparound promenade in favour of Infinite Verandas — cabins whose entire outer wall opens to the sea — and by the fourth ship the arrangement was settled enough that the changes were mostly to restaurants and the retreat-class suite complex.
