The story

What makes it different

Mozah carries cold. Her five insulated membrane tanks hold 266,000 cubic metres of liquefied natural gas at minus 162 degrees Celsius — enough energy, regasified, to heat a city of a million people through a winter month — and no gas carrier before or since has held more.

She is the lead of Qatar's Q-Max class, fourteen ships sized to the absolute limit of the country's own terminals and built in Korea as the floating half of the project that made Qatar the world's dominant LNG exporter. Q-Max introduced onboard reliquefaction — boil-off gas is captured, re-cooled and returned to the tanks rather than burned.

Named for Sheikha Mozah, mother of the current Emir, she was delivered by Samsung in 2008 and remains, with her sisters, the upper bound of gas shipping — the LNG trade's equivalent of the megamax container ship, and a class that Qatar's newest expansion programme deliberately chose not to exceed.
