What makes it different
Nieuw Statendam is the second of three Pinnacle-class ships and, with Rotterdam, shares a gross tonnage of 99,863 — Holland America having stopped deliberately just short of the 100,000-ton mark that every other mainstream line raced past a decade earlier.
That restraint is the brand's whole position. Where competitors added water parks and go-kart tracks, the Pinnacle ships spent their volume on a two-deck World Stage theatre with a 270-degree LED screen, a classical music venue, and more specialty restaurants than passenger numbers would normally justify.
The name is older than most cruise lines. Holland America has run a Statendam since 1898, and this is the sixth — the Nieuw prefix distinguishing her from her predecessors, in the same way Nieuw Amsterdam distinguishes that ship from the 1938 liner of the same name.
