What makes it different
Norwegian Joy is the most interesting ship in the Breakaway-Plus class because she was built for a market that never arrived. NCL specified her for China — karaoke suites, a tea house, a different retail mix, different dining rhythms — and based her at Shanghai and Tianjin from 2017.
The Chinese cruise market contracted rather than grew, and in 2019 NCL pulled her out, sent her for a substantial refit and redeployed her to Alaska and the Panama Canal. Much of what made her China-specific was removed; a further 2024 refurbishment pushed her further toward adult travellers with an expanded Vibe Beach Club and thermal spa.
Her lasting contribution is the go-kart track. It was specified for Joy as a Chinese-market attraction, proved popular enough to keep, and has since appeared on Bliss, Encore, Prima and Viva — an idea that outlived the reason it existed.
