The story

What makes it different

Ruby Princess is the last of the Grand class, a programme that ran from 1998 to 2008 and produced nine ships for Princess plus two more for P&O — the design that carried the line through a decade of expansion.

She belongs to the final Crown sub-class, which made a visible change to the Grand-class silhouette: the nightclub, which on the earlier ships was a distinctive structure suspended above the stern like a spoiler, was moved forward to sit just aft of the funnel. It is the easiest way to date a Grand-class ship from a photograph.

At 113,561 gross tons she was Princess's largest ship for five years until Royal Princess displaced her in 2013, and she has since settled into Caribbean, Alaska and Panama Canal work.
