The story

What makes it different

Disney Magic is the ship that made Disney a shipping company. She entered service in July 1998, built by Fincantieri, and she looks the way she does because Disney made a decision nobody else was making in the 1990s: build a ship that reads as an ocean liner rather than a floating hotel.

The result is a black hull, a raked bow, a white superstructure and two red funnels with black caps — plus, in place of a coat of arms, a Mickey silhouette worked into the funnel markings and a Goofy figure hanging over the stern with a paint pot. Only the aft funnel actually vents anything; the forward one is filled with youth club space.

She also introduced rotational dining, where guests and their serving team move together between three themed restaurants across a voyage rather than staying in one room — a genuinely original piece of hospitality design that Disney still runs on every ship. At around 84,000 gross tons she is now the smallest ship in a fleet whose largest is 208,000.
