What makes it different
Diamond Princess is unusual in the Princess fleet on two counts: she was built in Japan rather than Italy, and she is not, strictly, the ship that was meant to carry her name.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built her and her sister at Nagasaki. In October 2002 a fire swept through the hull then designated Diamond Princess, causing extensive damage. Rather than delay both ships, the names were exchanged — the undamaged hull became Diamond Princess and was delivered in 2004, while the repaired one became Sapphire Princess.
At 37.5 metres she and her sister are the widest Grand-class ships, a metre and a half broader than the Fincantieri-built hulls, which gives them a noticeably different profile. She has spent most of her career working Japan and Asia in the northern summer and Australia in the southern, and was re-registered from Bermuda to London in 2014.
