What makes it different
AIDAblu is the hinge of the Sphinx class. She was laid down to the original 69,203-ton design and then enlarged while she was on the slipway, coming out at 71,304 gross tons — and every ship after her was built to the bigger specification.
Changing a ship's dimensions mid-construction is not a small decision. It was taken in December 2007 alongside the order for two further sisters, at a point when AIDA was growing fast enough to justify redesigning a hull already in build.
She works the Greek islands and eastern Mediterranean out of Corfu, which suits a 253-metre hull. The Sphinx ships reach ports the 337-metre AIDAnova and AIDAcosma cannot approach at all.
