What makes it different
AIDAmar is the sixth Sphinx-series ship and one of the four enlarged versions — Meyer Werft raised the class from 69,203 to 71,304 gross tons partway through the run, adding cabins without changing the basic hull.
At around 253 metres the Sphinx ships are small by modern standards, which is why they still do the work they were built for: Baltic and Norwegian itineraries out of German ports, where berth length and port access matter more than onboard scale.
AIDA operates them on the club-ship model the brand invented for the German market — open seating, buffet-led dining, no formal nights and no assigned tables. It is a genuinely different product from anything the American or British brands sell.
