What makes it different
Celebrity Constellation is the last of the four Millennium-class ships and, at around 91,000 gross tons, roughly 30 per cent smaller than the Solstice ships that followed — which is now her selling point rather than her limitation.
The class is technically unusual. Instead of the diesel-electric arrangement almost every cruise ship uses, the Millennium ships were built with gas turbines driving Mermaid azimuth pods. The turbines burn cleaner but cost considerably more to run, and the pods gave the class a difficult decade of reliability problems in the 2000s.
All four ships went through Celebrity's Revolution refit programme, which reworked cabins and public rooms extensively enough that the interiors no longer read as early-2000s. Their smaller size lets them reach ports the Edge and Solstice ships cannot, which is why they have outlasted several larger contemporaries.
