The story

What makes it different

Celebrity Millennium is the oldest ocean-going ship in the fleet and the lead of a class that made a bet almost nobody else made: gas turbines instead of diesel engines.

Two General Electric turbines drive the electrical plant, feeding a pair of 19 MW Mermaid azimuth pods. The turbines are lighter, cleaner and much quieter than medium-speed diesels; they are also considerably more expensive to run on marine fuel, and the pods proved troublesome enough across all four ships that the arrangement was never repeated by the line.

She was rebuilt in 2019 under the Revolution programme — new staterooms, a new suite complex, reworked public rooms — which is why a ship approaching thirty years old still sells at premium prices. At 294 metres she also reaches ports the Edge class cannot, which is increasingly the argument for keeping her.

The class

The Celebrity Millennium line

Millennium class
Lead ship of four built at Saint-Nazaire between 1999 and 2002, succeeding the Century class and preceding the Solstice class.
Gas turbine power
One of very few cruise ship classes built with gas turbines rather than diesel engines — cleaner and quieter, but markedly more expensive to fuel.
