What makes it different
Nieuw Amsterdam is the second Signature-class ship, a stretched development of the Vista design that added around 4,000 gross tons and a couple of hundred passengers without changing the essential proportions.
Her name carries weight in the line's history — the 1938 Nieuw Amsterdam was Holland America's most celebrated liner, a ship that served as a troop transport through the Second World War and returned to Atlantic service afterwards. This is the fourth to carry it.
A 2023 refit gave her Morimoto by Sea, built with chef Masaharu Morimoto, which no other ship in the fleet has as a permanent venue. Otherwise the work was the unglamorous kind — carpets, soft furnishings, the parts of a fourteen-year-old ship that wear out.
