The story

What makes it different

The Triple-E was a philosophical U-turn expressed in steel. Emma Mærsk's generation chased speed; Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, delivered in 2013 as the largest ship in the world, was designed around going slower — a fuller, boxier hull, twin smaller engines instead of one monster, and a design speed cut by a quarter that halved fuel burn per container.

The name spells out the manifesto — Economy of scale, Energy efficiency, Environmentally improved — and honours Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the shipping patriarch who ran the group for over half a century and died the year before her delivery.

Twenty Triple-Es came from DSME in Korea, and the template — maximum boxes per tonne of fuel rather than maximum knots — is the one every megamax since has followed. Her 18,270 TEU record stood until MOL Triumph crossed 20,000 in 2017.
