The story

What makes it different

The Triple-E was a philosophical U-turn expressed in steel. Emma Mærsk's generation chased speed; Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, delivered in 2013 as the largest ship in the world, was designed around going slower, a fuller, boxier hull, twin smaller engines instead of one monster, and a design speed cut by a quarter that halved fuel burn per container.

The name spells out the manifesto, Economy of scale, Energy efficiency, Environmentally improved, and honours Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the shipping patriarch who ran the group for over half a century and died the year before her delivery.

Twenty Triple-Es came from DSME in Korea, and the template, maximum boxes per tonne of fuel rather than maximum knots, is the one every megamax since has followed. Her 18,270 TEU record stood until MOL Triumph crossed 20,000 in 2017.
